With so many grills to choose from, how do you select the "right" grill?
  • How big a grill should you buy?
  • What will it cost?
  • What features will you use?
  • Which brand is best?
For this blog let’s focus on three grill categories.  Think of purchasing a grill like a car.  My wife and I own a Honda and a BMW (she drives the BMW).  Those two brands are representative of the kind of grill you want to buy.  What you want to avoid are the “junkers”.

If we continue with this analogy there are Junkers, Honda’s and BMW’s.  One you want to avoid and two you want to purchase.

What makes a BBQ grill a junker?
  • An off brand where the manufacturer may not be around to support warranties or provide parts
  • A known brand who specializes in mass producing disposable grills (you’ll find a lot of these in the large box stores)
  • A grill that won’t last 15 to 20 years.
  • Single walled hoods that release heat
  • The performance is unreliable, underwhelming or both. (hot and cold spots, not enough heat, igniter failure, etc)
  • Most cart grills under $500 or built-in grills under a $1000 fall into this category.
We refer to the Honda category as the “Value Grill”.  What makes a BBQ grill a Honda?
  • Affordable, dependable and performs well with a life expectancy of 20 years
  • A grill that will not rust or corrode, even close to the coast
  • Will generate maximum temperatures of 600 to 800 degrees of mostly even heat
  • The price range for these grills start at $700 (for a cart grill) and cost as much as $2000 for a large grill with plenty of features
  • Features in this range can include lights, sear burners, back burners
  • Brands include:  Weber, AOG, Sole, Big Green Egg, Memphis Grills & Delta Heat
We refer to the BMW category as a “Premium Grill”.  What makes a BBQ grill a BMW?
  • High level of dependable performance for 20 plus years
  • Lifetime warranty’s by a “time tested” manufacturer for burners, cooking grates and grill body
  • Lots of features included with the grill such as; interior lights, smoker boxes, sear burners, back burners, knob mood lighting and hood springs for easy lifting.
  • Will generate 800 to 1000 degrees of even heat
  • Price range for these grills are $2,000 to $6,000
  • Brands include:  Lynx, Twin Eagles, Fire Magic & DCS
